10 things you need to  know about... Phablets
1 )  Size matters : A mix between a phone and tablet, phablet is the term used to describe any device that comes in between fi ve and seven inches. They offer a unique blend  of tablet-specifi c features with full phone capabilities as well.

2 )  Built for media : The larger screen on a phablet is perfect for handling all your media content. Using apps like Netfl ix means you’ll have access to all your fi lms and it’s defi nitely an improvement over a phone screen. They’re also the perfect choice for wanting to do a spot of mobile gaming.

3 ) Following the Note’s steps : Starting off the phablet craze was the Samsung Galaxy Note and despite the initial mixed reception for the 5.3-inch device, it has gone on from strength to strength and introduced the world to a new breed of device. It was also the fi rst device to come with its very own stylus in the S Pen.

4 )  Emerging markets : Despite a rise in popularity across Europe, phablet sales have really rocketed in the emerging Asian market. Companies like LG have launched their own phablets into the Far East market, namely the Optimus VU, to huge sales and even a follow-up device in the Optimus VU Pro.

5 ) When big is too big : Holding a fi ve-inch phablet to your head when making a call does look a bit stupid, but where is the cut-off point? Huawei has recently announced the giant 6.1-inch Huawei Ascend Mate, which also includes a quad-core processor, 4050mAh battery and 32GB of internal storage.

6 )  Dedicated apps : Both the Galaxy Note and Note II made good use of the included S Pen by bringing out a range of S Pen-friendly apps. The best of the bunch is S Planner, a great calendar system that lets you create and modify events when you need to.

7 ) Replacing phones : Shipments of phablets have increased dramatically this past year and are set to increase even more in 2013. An early report by Barclays shows that phablet shipments should climb to 143 million units and a whopping 228 million by 2015.

8 ) Developer annoyance : Developers don’t have an easy time putting together apps to run on a phablet. The awkward screen size means phone apps look pixelated and out of proportion, and a lot of work goes into making tablet apps fi t the smaller screen.

9 ) Plummeting prices : When phablets were released they held premium price tags. By searching around, you’ll fi nd the ZTE’s Grand Memo will launch with an affordable price tag.

10 ) Android vs Apple : Apple is yet to launch its own phablet onto the market, but early signs are it could be doing just that. The iPad mini has had some success so a slightly smaller one could defi nitely compete against the current crop of Android offerings.
